The description of every little thing in these first two chapters was perfect - I was immersed in the grandeur of the ball room and felt fully surrounded by London in 1939. There's just the right amount to keep you submerged in the atmosphere while not being overwhelming, and it surrounds you as you follow the characters through the story.
Writing is very good, but I'm not overly overwhelmed with the need to follow the characters any further. If anything, they were a little flat, but maybe they just need more time.
