This was a charming novel set in the first half of the twentieth century where the glitz and glamour of the ballroom was still alive. The central characters were likeable. There were secrets a plenty and just a hint of jeopardy. It took me a little while to get into it and I couldn’t help visualising the author himself as the leading man but that didn’t detract at all. The upstairs/ downstairs element added a hint of downton abbey or the itv drama the halcyon. I read it predominantly because of who the author was but definitely enjoyed myself. I would sum the book up by saying it was true old world escapism and I would almost certainly read further offerings by anton du Beke. It’s been a couple of months now since I read it but I can still recall the characters and plot which can only be a good sign.
