Phew, I really really enjoyed this book!.
I have watched Anton on Strictly since the beginning and always liked him and was a little worried that this book would be a letdown, but I shouldn't have worried.
Set over a 6 month period in 1936 it follows the fortunes of ballroom star Raymond De Guise who rules the dancefloor at London's Buckingham hotel, and new chambermaid Nancy Nettleton. As preparations for the grand New Years Masquerade ball take place, there is alongside it a swell of antisemitic and fascist sympathisers, which collide with devastating consequences for De Guise.
Anton has managed to mix the glamour of a top hotel, and specifically the ballroom stars, with a serious message about the political atmosphere of the time, without making it feel preachy or depressing.
The characters are believable, and although not all likeable, each bring something important to the story, which moves at an enjoyable pace.
I think this book lends itself well to having a sequel, and I would like to read it.
Good first novel Mr Du Beke!
