Many people might think they know a little about Anton Du Beke from his television appearances but this debut novel shows a completely different talent, that of author rather than dancer. This novel is set in the period leading up to the second world war in a grand London hotel and the lives of the staff, particularly the dancer in the Grand Ballroom. The reader learns in the opening pages that he has had no contact with his family for some years for reasons not explained but which, presumably - hopefully, will become clear as the book progresses. The reader is also introduced to a new, young chambermaid arriving at the hotel and it will be interesting to read how their stories evolve and become intertwined. The cover of this book show an elegantly dressed couple standing on a well-lit bridge on a cloudless, starlit night portraying the time just before the war before the lights went out and wartime austerity set in. This novel gets off to an intriguing start and I'm sure many readers will thoroughly enjoy this first novel.
