The world inside The Buckingham is far removed from the world that normal people in London live in, unless of course you’re one of the maids, lift operators, waiters and barmen, concierges, receptionists and housekeepers. Theirs is a life of hard work and trying to keep the illusion of of another world, which is what money can buy you, if you can afford it. The guests at The Buckingham are indulged by the staff, their every whim is catered for and Anton du Beck paints the picture of this opulence brilliantly. The way he describes the decor of the hotel and the ladies dresses really takes you into the pages of the book, you could almost be there. The book tells the tale of the Professional dancers and a young housemaid, new to London from a Lancashire mining village and we follow her experiences in this brand new world.
