A powerful story of the impact of momentary decisions
This story has torn out my heart, stomped on it and then gradually and carefully stitched it back together. It is a story of youth and tragic events and exactly as the title says -how everything can change in ‘One Split Second’
The start of the book involves several families and character names, which I had to focus on tracking, but as the story unfolded with the characters I developed a clear understanding of who was who and how they were connected. I had questions I needed answers to which had me always wanting to read on.
This is a powerful story and some scenes will stay embedded in my mind, particularly the haunting hospital walk of honour.
I think this story has engaged me totally because it is the story of real people -it could be any of us! The emotions are so well-crafted showing real and desperate grief, the finality and incomprehension of loss and the impossibility of coping and moving on.
It is a powerful story of growing up and consequences and guilt. Caroline Bond has created a story so real I was exhausted, living the events alongside the characters, willing them through the turbulence and there were tears - ugly crying! Brilliant! And now I am bereft!
