This novel will certainly appeal to the parents of teenagers. A strength of the book is the writer’s ability to get inside the heads of both children and adults. She avoids cliche descriptions and focuses well on the relationships between them.

The book deals with what it is to parent today although at its heart is tragedy. Relationships are complex not just between parents and children, but between the teenagers too. This could have been badly done, but it was dealt with really well.

This novel explores complex themes, such as survivor’s guilt. It’s a difficult read at times too with grief, loss and identity all coming in to play.

I enjoyed this and at times found it quite heartbreaking.
