Limited intrigue

I find this book partially intriguing. There are two phases to this 30 pages, one an Italian policeman is called out to a body on a beach, two an English mother grieves over her dead toddler. The writing is quite good, but the two phases didn’t marry up too well, so I found that the level of intrigue did not match that of other reviews.

The Italian policeman character didn’t really stand out, couldn’t find an affinity with him and his characterisation didn’t suit what in my mind an Italian man is. The grieving mother was much better, her sorrow, her weak physique, her hidden bottle of gin, all blended well into her downtrodden life.

The summary explains that the womans child died suddenly and hints at some kind of wrecklessness or murderous intents. This is set to be revealed when the man and wife go on holiday to Italy, suspicions and skulduggery afoot. We didn’t reach this more interesting stage in the story, so it doesn’t make me wish to read further, what was on offer was good, but not nearly enough.
