One Year Later contrasts the harrowing emotions felt after the death of a young child against the idyllic Italian countryside. The Flowers family a mixed bag of characters, each with a complex back story, have decided to gather to commemorate Ruby-may, who died the previous year in a tragic accident. They meet together in an Italian farmhouse, along with two family friends. The book is told via the perspective of two main characters; Nick, the child's uncle and Amy, her mother. Both offer contrasting perspectives and are both very easy to connect with. It's a compelling read and, whilst not an 'edge of your seat thriller' deals with the layers of family trauma very effectively. The twist at the end does take you by surprise but feels appropriate.
