‘One Year Later’ is a family drama/ mystery novel set in Italy. I thought it was an enjoyable read, despite its’ hard subject matter. It gets darker throughout, but as it does so it becomes quite compelling. As the drama intensifies, so the writing improves - the author excels at writing high-octane scenarios.
One year ago, Ruby-May died, and we follow the story as her family take a trip to Italy to try to mend the cracks her death has left behind.
As the book progresses, it transpires that her death has affected each family member differently (the different perspectives were fascinating) and that most characters are keeping secrets. From the start, it’s obvious that Ruby-May’s mother Amy blames her husband over the death, and I was particularly interested to know if the relationship could survive. Despite the theme, the Italian setting sounded lovely!
