This was a slow burner, but definitely had me hooked by midway! The booked is narrated from the viewpoint of Amy and her brother, Nick. From the beginning we are aware that Amy has suffered the unimaginable loss of a child, but is trying to mark the one year anniversary by going away with the family. Nick, on the other hand, is trying to process lot of unfinished family business. You know the holiday is not going to go smoothly.
The book is full of recrimination and a lot which was unspoken becomes spoken. Apart from Nick and Amy, the characters are explored very little, although Amy’s husband Matt is a real piece of work! You know that there is going to be a big revelation and there is something of a twist to the finale. I really enjoyed this book, Altho found it a slow starter. It would have been nicer to get the ‘feel’ of Italy as it’s such an evocative place.
