Like many novels currently, this begins with a prologue setting a tense and puzzling scene which will no doubt be unravelled as we read on. The first chapters dealing with the loss of a child are poignantly observed and immediately help us to engage with the central character and family.

We are invited to identify with a family in deep grief and also to consider sinister secrets which one or some of them are hiding. This adds to the tension of the novel as we are not quite sure who we can really truly trust.

The descriptions of Italy are of an idyll, yet we feel within this too the threat of something else. This is certainly a skill the writer uses well.

This is one to read for those who enjoy a psychological thriller.
