This book is a great read. It starts off as seeming to be a bit of a fluffy read, but as the story develops, some difficult subjects are introduced and dealt with in a realistic and sympathetic way. Alf and Letty are two solid and believable characters, with whom you immediately engage, and want to find out what happens to them. The story is written ina logical and well paced manner, alternately continuing the story from either Letty’s or Alf’s point of view.
The book is mainly set in Italy, and the description of the places visited are so glorious that you will want to get out your passport and fly off to visit them immediately.
If you are going to buy one book of purely escapist fiction this year, this is the book to go for.
