I was very drawn to the sumptuous, incredibly beautiful descriptions of Rome that featured so heavily. It made me feel that I was in Rome, walking along the Spanish Steps, past the Coliseum, or gazing down at the city from a great height. So much so that Rome was a character along with Letty and Alf.
To begin with, I wasn't sure how these 2 people could ever manage to find love with each other. Having seemingly nothing in common but being English
in Rome, they slightly reminded me of classic Kathrine Hepburn/Spencer Tracey films of a bygone era. They both have come from interesting yet such different backgrounds, but Letty's was heart breaking. I was not expecting the twist just before she fled Rome.
