"Our Chemical Hearts" by Krystal Sutherland is a pathetic attempt at writing young adult fiction about grief and mental illness, while perpetuating stereotypes and portraying harmful depictions of consent. Our narrator, Henry, falls in love with a strange and enigmatic girl, Grace, and proceeds to follow her around and persuade her into revealing more information about her life. He soon realizes that she has a dark past and begins to crack more open about her. Unfortunately, I do not think this was a strong novel, and it felt extremely derivative of better young adult novels that broach similar serious themes. I felt that the author has a strong enough writing ability. Also, I read a re-released edition of this novel. Four years after its first publication, I expected there to be less problematic content and offensive parts to be removed, but I was very disappointed. Look elsewhere.
