I was in two minds about reading Our Chemical Hearts as I didn’t finish reading A Semi Definitive List of my Worst Nightmares - the other Krystal Sutherland book which I tried a couple of years ago.
Our Chemical Hearts is an unusual book about teenage love and loss. The main characters are Henry and Grace who are selected to edit their high school newspaper. Henry falls in love with, and loses his virginity to, Grace however Grace is still grieving the death of her first boyfriend, Dom, who was killed in a car accident a few months previously, in which Grace was also seriously injured.
This book is funny, sad and poignant. The prose was a mixture of dialogue, texts and narrative with witty and relevant references to popular films and tv programs. Although it is set in the USA and written for Young Adults, I was pleased that I could recognise and relate to the characters and their angst.
