Krystal Sutherland's debut novel Our Chemical Hearts is a genuine insight into the world of heartache and first loves. Although at sometimes cliche, Sutherland gives enough plot twists and mystery to her characters to keep the plot line moving and to keep you reading on.

Her characters within this book are both likeable and frustrating. Henry Page is your typical teen heart throb you would expect to find within the pages of a YA novel. He is at some points loveable at others you want to tell him to sort himself out! As well as his close knit group of friends consisting of Lola and Murry, the threes friendship is a lovely one to follow throughout the story.

As for the main mystery girl - Grace Town - she is at times unlikeable, confusing and frustrating which allows the story line to move forward, as you find yourself flipping from Henry's side to Grace's as secrets are revealed and true colours are shown.

Generally Sutherland writes in a way that ensures an easy and smooth read. Typical of a YA novel, she blends into the genre easily. It is nice to see her development and presentation of high school as a time of everybody gathering together, rather than separating the cliche groups and "status quo". Our Chemical Hearts delivers a true message about grief, first love and forgiveness - a great read.
