We are introduced to Grace Town as this atypical female character who dresses in baggy clothes and has a sallow appearance from the gecko. As a reader I immediately want to know why the clothes, why the disheveled appearance, why the self distancing from creative writing, why these descriptions in general which I assume will be developed more into the novel. The text strays from the typical "oh boy meets girl and boom falls in love instantaneously" or the immediate physical attraction that typical YA novels succumb to yet the whole setting is in high school and we see the typical high school themes like scandals, drugs, sex, detention, relationships, etc. I think the novel would appeal to a younger crowd than myself as someone in her early twenties. I do like the parentheticals that are assumingly purposefully inserted to add humor and direct thoughts from our narrator despite being cringey and over elaborate sometimes. The character descriptions are pretty immaculate I can really picture them in a movie of sorts but I sort of wish I got some more generalized characteristics so I could formulate their figure and personalities in my mind and that way every reader has a different style of Mr. Hink or Lola Leung. We can personify the characters how we like it from our point of view. I like the character self reflections, I like the poetry inserts I like Grace's quirkiness, I like the typical high school mannerisms that these characters have.
