Our Country Friends tells the story of friends getting together during lockdown rather than being on their own. Sasha Senderovsky invites some of his friends plus an actor he hopes to work with to live in the bungalows in the grounds of the house he shares with his wife, Masha, and daughter, Natasha who is usually known as Nat. Sasha has been friends with some of them since he was a young man and is looking forward to their prolonged stay and enjoying their company. The friends come from a mixture of backgrounds but have always got on well but they haven't spend such a long time in one another's company since they were students. Initially I very much enjoyed this book and felt that Gary Shteyngart had written a very good account of life in difficult times. The group came together every evening for a meal and shared lively discussions and there were a few romances in the months they were together. Towards the end one of the characters falls ill and there is page after page of the dreams this person suffered while unwell. At first I didn't realise it was dreams which was a bit confusing. This section went on too long for my taste although I'm sure there are other readers who felt it was the best part of the book. All readers are different but this book wasn't one of the ones I've really enjoyed.
