This is set during March 2020 around the pandemic, as a group of friends and acquaintances gather in a country house rather than spend lockdown isolated or alone. At the beginning, it feels like a jumble of characters put together to interest the readers rather than drive a story. As you get into the book some of the characters flaws and assets become intermingled and there is a sense of togetherness especially around the evening meals and conversations and relationships that develop. I did find the book quite a sad read and this was not just linked to the sadness and anxieties of lockdown but also connected one character and their illness. I felt the author had really thought about how important dreaming had become to everyone over lockdown but reading about someone who is very ill and their dreams was particularly powerful.
Unfortunately, this isn’t is a book I would reread or recommend.
