Our Country Friends by Gary Shteyngart has a bright blue cover, however the artwork is at odds with this and the house gives me a horror story vibe. Definitely not in keeping with the book type.
The story is set at the start of the Covid pandemic in America.
A Russian couple and their adopted daughter live on a country estate outside New York so invite some friends to stay with them in holiday bungalows. The male of the couple is a novelist fast running through his money and keen to get a screen play set up with a famous Actor he has invited. Along with the actor he has invited 2 college friends, a student he used to teach and an old friend who travels the world.
The first half of the novel is really interesting as we get introduced to a wide range of characters and explore their complex relationships. I did not fully understand the app of Troo love and found this part a bit odd.
However I found the last quarter of the book dragged and could not keep me interested. I ended up skim reading to finish the book, though I did enjoy the last chapter.
I felt the book could have been made shorter with lots of the last section cut out and I would have enjoyed it more.
