Over emotional, underwhelming

I read a lot of YA fiction and this doesn’t really speak to me at all. It feels very formulaic - the opening line (after an over-sensitive post of trigger warnings and an ‘emotion checklist’ talks about “the first time I kissed a boy”. We get it, it’s a queer book!
I thought we were past the phase where a character is defined by their sexuality. There are a lot of very good YA books out where the characters identity is incidental (as it should be, in my option. Who you kiss doesn’t define who you are)

This feels like a step backwards, rather than being progressive.
