Thank you so much Readers First for a copy of Overemotional by David Fenne in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Overemotional is a YA coming of age story that totally captures the pain, embarrassment, awkward, frustrating, painful, and emotional journey from childhood to adulthood. Throw in the whole marvel action cross and it is truly a wonderful romp through teenage awkwardness that can’t be put down!
Whilst Overemotional is a story told across multiple points of view, Steven the protagonist is so wonderful, you cannot help but fall in like with him. At the age of 17 he believes he has no other option but, to run away to a dreadful, dilapidated seaside town called Grunsby-on-Sea to protect his family from the terrifying new powers that he’s developed that he just cannot control. And I’m not joking he really can’t…
“Seventeen-year-old Steven has a big problem... Whenever he feels intense emotions, weird things happen. Like when he kissed a boy for the first time, and the boy's head literally exploded.”
Whenever Steven feels any sort of strong positive or overwhelming emotions, strange things happen and he believes that the only way to control this is to be as miserable as possible, in the most miserable place in the world.
Luckily for us and most importantly for Steven, there are some wonderful characters in this book including Freya, Steven’s best-friend who won’t take no for an answer, tracking him down to bring him home, plus her reluctant travel companion and boyfriend Marcus, and her American friend Troy. Adding to all the action, intrigue and drama, a secret government agency is also trying to track Steven down for their own nefarious reasons.
The story itself is a fabulous romp, I won’t say that it has a hugely complex plot or that there are any twists that will totally trip you up but, what it does have is a very British sense of humour, (you have been warned!) and a fun LGBTIQQ storyline. There’s a lot packed into this book, and I will advise some trigger warnings you should check out before you pick this book up, particularly when you apply what for some can be seen as the dry and depending on your perspective, twisted UK sense of humour.

If you’re looking for a modern, YA, action packed superhero adventure then Overemotional is the book for you!
