Overemotional is a middle grade magical realism novel that encapsulates what it means to grow up queer in the UK, as well as the importance of friendship.

I do feel I’m a little bit too old to fully appreciate this one (as it was clearly written for a much younger audience), but I found Steven’s journey towards self acceptance and discovery endearing nonetheless. His relationship with Freya in particular was realistic and wholesome.

I think the narrative voices let it down though to be honest. At times the author was trying a bit too hard to throw in humour and relatability that it came off as slightly cringe (especially Troy’s characterisation and the constant American stereotypes). Made the flow a bit slow towards the end and I felt like it could’ve been cut a bit shorter- despite the zombie-esque creatures which i thought were cool.
