I finished reading Overemotional in less than two days. It has all the qualities I look for in a gay young adult novel: a compelling romance, humour, mystery, and interesting characters.
The book is very (over)emotional, very British, and very gay!
The intriguing premise that Steven's emotions are having a reverse effect on the world around him is explored in several ways, offering a unique perspective on the whole superpowers debate.
Even though one of the plot twists is fairly obvious, you'll still be gripped to see how the characters react, heightening the suspense throughout the novel.
The romance is adorable, goofy, and closely related to a different plot twist.
A special thanks to Enid Blyton, whose works I devoured as a child and who is now mentioned in a modern YA novel!
The writing was wonderfully charming and for the most part was really light-hearted (though given some of the topics explored I’d still suggest checking TWs beforehand) and the dialogue and banter we see between Steven and Co. was soo entertaining. And, to me at least, felt really authentic to their ages and personalities.
