‘Overemotional’ has a really interesting magical system concept, where different emotions cause different powers to manifest. The main character Steven has a unique ability where his emotions correspond to the opposite effects. For example, happiness should have a positive effect but his power manifests as a disastrous effect. We follow Steven struggling to come to terms with his new abilities and running away to Grunsby on Sea. Steven’s friends follow him to the miserable little seaside town where weird things start to happen.

This is an incredible adventure packed with many mysteries, twists and turns. A secret organisation tracking down people with extraordinary powers. An unexpected villain with a troublesome past. And lots of awesome fight scenes!

As well as action, the book is full of distinctly unique characters. We follow multiple points of view throughout, not just by chapter but within each chapter itself. Steven also struggles personally with his own sexuality, which was handled very well.

This has the potential to be a major new YA queer sci-fi trilogy. Excited to see what comes next!
