The cover is impressively dynamic full of action, as is the book! Peregrine is a girl, and her name is just one of a range of great names, like her godfather Daedalus. On page 1 we meet a Dryad (who has a bowler hat and green tipped ears) and more and more unusual characters spring up on every page, if not every paragraph! The story bubbles with magic, and immortal beings. There is great characterisation, and ever changing images, I like the idea of a mechanical crow who reads the newspaper out loud to you, but not so much the idea of tentacles sprouting out of human noses if you are not careful. The Portal Tunnel Network, that links "us" with the immortal "them" has broken down and their engineers cannot fix it. Peregrine's godfather knows what to do, but can she find him in time? Each paragraph sparkles with events and creatures, some extreme ones actually wear cardigans! Very readable and enjoyable.
