There are some books which pull you in from the first page, and this is one of them. This inter-realm fantasy adventure from debut author Ash Bond was a joy to read. I particularly loved the characters of Rowan Strong, trainee Librarian who finds herself involved in a dangerous mission which is definitely not in the librarian’s handbook, and Callimachus Thorn, wannabe CSI (cosmic sprite investigations) operative and faun who doesn’t tick the usual boxes. While some parts of the book follow the classic fantasy tropes, it is different enough to be unique and there were a few plot twists I didn’t expect- it’s always good to be surprised and the writing flows effortlessly off the page. I will eagerly await the second in the series!
The cover art and internal illustrations of the characters (inside cover) are also simply stunning, while the maps of both Oxford and the UUG (under under ground) network take this from being any old adventure novel to proper world building territory. If you get the chance, read it- I foresee big things for this series!
