The first four chapters sees the point of view switch between the title character Peregrine Quinn (who has been brought up on the stories of her godfather Daedalus Bloom and his life as an immortal), Rowan Strong (a Dryad librarian who - amongst other things - has to keep Peregrine's liking for shiny weaponry in check) and Cal(limachus Thorn, a faun who is a liaison for something called Olympus Inc.). Between them, the trio will go on to be tasked with fixing the portals connecting the Terran Realm (where Peregrine lives) with the Cosmic Realm when a) they mysteriously shut down and b) the only one who can fix them - Bloom - is kidnapped, taking on the creatures from Bloom's stories in the process.

A fast-paced fantasy rooted in the real world, with familiar locations such as the streets of Oxford as well as the London riverways and underground, the regular narrative changes can be difficult to keep up with whilst reading, but are signposted with a name and location to start each chapter, while the mixture of herbs with traditional magic may also interest those who like stories with a botanical theme.
