This is the first in a proposed series of books for young teenagers featuring 12 year old mortal (maybe) Peregrine Quinn. It mixes Greek mythology with magic and cosplay. It features, amongst other fantastical creatures, fauns, dryads, giants and centaurs as well as sentient plants which form portals between the mortal and cosmic worlds. And there are libraries - what’s not to like?. When Peregrine’s immortal godfather Daedalus Bloom goes missing Peregrine sets out on a quest to find him before Discord is re-introduced into the World(s). Yes, this is a book where eventually the fate of the universe will depend upon a 12-year-old girl- oh, and there’s a duck in there somewhere… There is a huge cast of characters and I did feel that it got quite busy at times… following who was doing what and where. Perhaps that’s because I am more than half a century older than the target audience. I prefer my stories to unfold at a more sedate pace than at the frenetic pace of a computer game. But nevertheless I read the rattling good yarn with pleasure -
