Taking its title inspiration from the words of Stephen King - “Books are a uniquely portable magic” - Portable Magic is a book about books (surely there should be a name for that by now?), from the physicality and allure of the printed word, to the history of printing and the printing press.
Now, I am a bibliophile; I work with books, my shelves are covered with books and, if someone offered me the chance to live in a bookshop, I would gladly accept without a second thought. I love books about books! Saying that, the introduction to Portable Magic is very dense; there is a lot of information crammed into some very long paragraphs, so much so that I resorted to skim reading in parts.
It will be interesting to see where the rest of this book takes us as our love of, and relationship with, books unfolds across its pages.
