Books and reading are close to my heart but I must admit that I do not read enough non fiction , so I was pleasantly surprised when I received my copy of this book for review.

To be honest I found that the first twenty pages or so of introduction were a bit rambling and unappealing and , perhaps , a little too scholarly for my taste. However, once I entered the body of the book and adjusted to the writing style I began to enjoy the experience. This is very well researched and provides a history of books and their place in society. From the first printing press to the e- book, it is full to the brim with interesting facts and historical information. Would you like to take a peek into Marilyn Monroe’s library or know the connection between the construction of a motorway and Mills and Boon? Then have fun and read this book.

The chapters are organised by theme rather than in historical chronological order so the book is ideally suited dipping in and out. All in all a good read.
