While I acknowledge that this book is extremely well-written and researched, it just wasn't for me. I love books and so thought that their history would appeal to me, but I found that I was unable to finish this book. I tried a couple of times and just found it dry. That isn't to say that it won't appeal to a lot of people. Emma Smith is certainly an expert in her field and covers a lot of topics, in relation to books and story-telling, that I would never have anticipated being merged together. It felt like the magic the title promised was missing.
The use of the famous Stephen King quote is enough to guarantee my interest, but there just wasn't anything particularly magical about the book, unfortunately. If I had all of the time in the world, I would have stuck with it, I think. But I had other books that I was desperate to get started and this was preventing me from doing that.
