My 3 stars are a bit mean because the book is beautifully written and the author is undeniably knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. I, however, like to read as a way to relax and this book is more of an education, something you may wish to dip in and out of rather than read to chill out and give the grey cells a rest.

The author has made what could have been a very dry subject fascinating and I learnt so many interesting facts about books, their history and their influence on the world. She also manages to include humour and slight wry sarcasm, which I enjoyed. The author’s writing style is very approachable, unusual in someone whose knowledge of a subject is so vast, and she explains everything in an engaging, accessible and passionate style. That said, I would still consider this book more academic than mainstream reading but if you want to learn about the history of books in an entertaining way, I doubt you would find much better reference.
