It did feel like a hybrid of a Wilbur Smith setting and a Jurassic Park plot, with a dash of teenage computer games thrown in for good measure.
There may have been more intrigue if the cover hadn’t already given me an expectation.
Contemporary, with references to pandemics/PPE, computer games and DNA manipulation, there’s lots that teenagers can identify with.
The plot is quite simplistic and clear - mad evil scientist against righteous conservationists and no deep thinking is involved. The only teenage angst is Robyn’s resistance against her father’s new girlfriend.
The story does get into the action pretty quickly and the pace picks up and pulled me along. The sense of danger only sharpened later on in the book as the two main characters of Robyn and Ralph had no concerns about wandering through the bush alone/unarmed or considered the consequences of trespassing on the baddie’s land where they suspect there are some dodgy animals. The chase worked to increase the tension and led to the jumping off point for the next in the series.
A straightforward thriller for teenagers.
