“I can tell someone when they’re going to die. All I need is a lock of hair and their soul.
Just in case.” – Selestra

16 year old Selestra isn’t just a normal teenager. She is a Somniatis witch that is tied to King Seryth. When Selestra touches someone she can see how they will die. During the Festival of Predictions people come to find out their death prediction. Once told their death prediction if they outrun their death they can earn a wish and have the chance to take the King’s immortality. But if they die their soul is forfeit to the King. Nox arrives at the festival with one goal to take the King’s immortality and has his sights firmly set on killing Selestra. However, when Selestra touches Nox she sees a vision of not only Nox’s death but also hers as her fate is intertwined with his. Can Selestra and Nox must stay alive with the King hot on their trail.

I don’t think I’ve been more excited to read a book than I have been on seeing this book announced and then eagerly awaiting its arrival. I absolutely adored this book. The storyline was captivating, full of magic and transported me to The Six Isles from the first page. When Selestra and Nox were on the run I felt like I was with them each step of the way. I really liked the concept of the story i.e. a witch that can see how and when someone will die which is intertwined with the King’s game of devouring more souls to remain immortal.

Selestra was a fascinating character from the outset. As soon as I read the first line of the story I knew she was going to be an interesting character. Essentially Selestra is a witch in training. Her destiny is eventually to take over her mother’s role and truly be tied to the King forever. Selestra is definitely an accomplished witch but she isn’t aware of the great power she has. Due to her role she has lived quite a sheltered life. She’s never been beyond the walls of the castle or The Floating Mountain. As the King’s heir he has immense control over her and her life is not her own. That is until she meets Nox. Nox has a significant influence on Selestra’s life and it’s through him that she realises that she is more powerful than she thought and in some ways she is more powerful than her mother. I really loved the banter between Selestra and Nox. They had this love/hate relationship from the point they first meet but the more time they spend together the more they realise that they do like each other’s company. Although the storyline revolves around Selestra and Nox trying to stay alive it is also about Selestra’s journey to discovering not only who she truly is but who she is destined to be.

If you like stories filled with magic and the enemies to lovers trope this is a must read.
