I enjoyed this YA fantasy story full of witches, royalty and magic. Selestra is trapped in her tower awaiting her fate of becoming the King’s Witch just like all her ancestors before her, bound by a blood oath to serve him as he steals the souls of others to gain immortality. Nox is a soldier in the King’s army, determined to avenge his father and save the kingdom. A prediction of their intertwined deaths throws the pair together as they race to save each other and themselves.
I enjoyed the plot and the twists throughout. It’s described as a Rapunzel retelling but I think the link is very tenuous (girl with long hair trapped in a tower is about where the resemblance ends). That being said, it works as a story on its own and doesn’t need the comparison. I liked the characters, although there were a few cringey parts of them trying to be very “sassy” or generally arrogant. I also found it hard to follow the dual POVs which were written in first person which I always find confusing.
I would describe this as quite a typical YA fantasy story with enemies-to-lovers and a good winning over evil plot. I enjoyed it overall!
