I'm typically not a big fan of fantasy literature, however I really enjoyed this one. There wasn't an overabundance of world-building, but enough to give an understanding of the environment and how it led to the situation at hand. the characters and plot were given more attention, with Selestra's development becoming a sort of coming-of-age story as she realizes that she is in charge of her own destiny. I believe this is an excellent message for the YA audience and it was presented well.

It is said to be a retelling of Rapunzel, but aside from the obvious characteristics, there is not much else in the story that is related to Rapunzel. Having said that, the protagonists were typically intriguing and engrossing, and the plot's usual twists met the expectations of a good versus evil conflict. However, as stated earlier, the plot was somewhat predictable, and the writing was typical for a young adult book. Written clearly and easily understood. engrossing fantasy novel.

This one didn't have much romance, but given that it was YA, it was kind of expected. They were cute together, though, and it was fun to see them become more protective of one another after the "dislike" at the beginning. I haven't read To Kill a Kingdom yet, but I think this will motivate me to do so, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Also, this cover is absolutely stunning! Overall, each of her covers is breathtaking.
