I generally not a big fan of fantasy books but I really enjoyed this. There wasn't too much world building and the background provided was just enough to let you know what was happening and how we ended up in the world we were in.

There was more focus on character building and the plot and I liked the way Selestra developed throughout the book making it almost a coming of age as she realises that she is in control of her destiny. This I think is a great message for the YA market and it was done well.

The friendship that develops between Nox and Selestra as well as the change in dynamics when Micah and Irenya join the group was great. However, Micah and Irenya tend to be overlooked at times, when they could in fact have been more key players.

The story itself was quite fast paced with lots of action, magic, murder and witches and it was a fun read. Just perfect for cold, wet winter evenings.
