Tarisai is a lonely child in a house with only servants and tutors for company, unable, for some reason to attract attention from passing travellers, and with only the occasional visit from her mother.
After a late night clandestine foray into the outside world she meets a strange fairylike (to her) stranger who shows her origins in a vision.
Soon after, her mother arrives with two new, permanent , tutors and lays a compulsion on her which has been the only reason for her existence.
