Fantasy about Tarisai, a half magical 6 year old child who is curious to find her mother and what her sinister plans are for her future.

Written in the fantasy style, theres also some African influence in the words and names. Overall this book does capture the imagination nicely, there are some cringeworth phrases, but these dont harm the good writing too much. Some of the words used were complicated, which would challenge a YA, good.

Set in Africa, the vegetation is pretty believable, but elephants are hardly inspiring, I hope that more unique animals come along later. The main curiousity are the fairies and their magic skills.

Tarisai meets her Dad in this extract, he is a fairy, it turns out that her Mum is a bad un and made him have sex with her to gain a special magical child servant with the purpose of killing some Raybearer person. How did she force herself upon him, it was one of the three wishes she extracted from him by threatening to exterminate all of the wildlife within a 50 mile radius.

Tarisia comes across as older than her 6 years, maybe because of the magic, but she is interesting, so is her weird fairy Dad. The mother with nasty motives offers good potential for conflict. Although it is still standard plot, a mother makes a daughter fall in love with a boy, then she makes her kill him.

Its promising, the style will not suit all, but its good to see the magic of Africa combined with the magic of fairies.
