Raybearer tells the story of Tarisai, who is raised in isolation with her mysterious and often absent mother, known only as The Lady. When Tarisai comes of age she is sent to the empire capital of Aritsar to be chosen by the Crown Prince to join his Council of Eleven. The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that compels Tarisai to kill the Crown Prince. But is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself?

Raybearer is a wonderful YA fantasy book, with a brilliant range of characters. Tarisai is a smart and determined character. After growing up a lonely child she longs for a family, and so attaches herself to other the other children she meets in Aritsar. Doya, Sanjeet and Kirah are great characters, and I loved their little group, and the romantic story is just so lovely.

With West-African influences, the world within this story is incredibly detailed, mystical and colourful. The world is built up so well it’s easy to visualise the different areas of Aritsar. I was so intrigued about the Hallows (gifts) of each of the characters, and loved how the characters used their gifts to help their friends

The first couple of chapters seemed to rush to get the story to the Capital and the Crown Prince, but as soon as Tarisai was there it slowed down so I could really appreciate what was happening.

There were some surprising twists within the story which I loved, and the ending makes me want a sequel now!

As someone who has been struggling with YA Fantasy recently this was the perfect antedote. Highly recommend!
