"At present, however, no monster frightened me more than my own reflection."
This was such an unexpected love, considering it was written by a debut author it is nothing short of breathtaking. The way the story is crafted with the stakes constantly increasing and such brilliant character work it really is a breath of fresh air for the genre and a standout for what YA fantasy should be.
I will say it did take me a little while to get into this one and stay absorbed into the story however that was definitely on my part, considering the timing of when I read it. For this reason as well as the fact that I enjoyed the world so much I can see me rereading it in the future for definite.
I loved and empaphised with all the characters from the get go , I really enjoyed how we saw our main charcter at different stages of her personal development as you can really see her naivity leaving her and her struggling with what that means for her own personal morality.
There are aspects of destiny mixed in with difficulty with parental relationships and expectations and overall it was really layered in areas I didn't expect.
The storyline is engaging and the stakes move into various stages through each part, making the structure a real aide to the book.
The worldbuilding was unique and well developed and I enjoyed seeing how the mythology and religion played a part in the conflict.
Considering the unavoidable events that will be occuring in the next book, I have every hope that the next book will be even better.
