This YA debut book contains elements of magic, hope and betrayal.

The central character is Tarisai, a gifted child who longs for a loving family despite being raised in isolation by her so called mother, The Lady.

At the age of 11 by her mother's request, Tarisai is taken to the palace to join the contest to become one of the Crown Prince’s Council of Eleven. They are all completely interlinked mentally and emotionally by the Ray. A connection greater than blood.

After becoming one of the Prince's trusted, Tarisai must choose her destiny. Either to obey her mother's magical wish of killing the prince or continue being part of his council.

The story itself is written in three parts. It is written in the first person by the viewpoint of Tarisai.

After seeing the front cover and reading the synopsis, I was amazed. The front cover is like an optical illusion of a woman's face and that of lion with lioness, ideal for the story. The author, Jordan Ifueko has done a fantastic job in describing the characters and setting. There's also a map of the realms to aid readers, character list and Glossary of key African words.
