This book is set in a beautiful west African inspired world. The world building was brilliant, I was almost immediately able to understand the magic system and hierarchy, and the characters themselves were developed really well.
The first few chapters were slow, and I was slightly confused as toward the events chronology, but fifty pages in it was all sorted.
There was a romance plotline, and I was initially exited, however I felt like there was no chemistry between Tarisai and the love interest.
I loved the political intrigue and court machinations, I especially liked The Lady, and had a roller-coaster of emotions around her skillful manipulation and character development.
Raybearer contains murder, mystery, magic, revenge, betrayal, it has it all, including completely un-guessable plot twists, that still seemed to make perfect sense!
The cover is beautiful and definitely appropriate to the book.
