It’s so difficult to write a review of something that you simply loved.

This story is about Tarisai. A child who lives completely isolated from the rest of the world. The Lady, her mother, doesn’t allow Tarisai outside or to meet anyone except her tutors. She is forced to study every day in every matter. She barely sees her mother. She can’t even be touched, because her tutors are scared of her. Tarisai has the power to steal memories by touching someone. Until one day, she is taken to court to become part of the Crown Prince’s council of eleven, but The Lady has other plans for Tarisai. She is bound by a magical wish to kill the Crown Prince.

This is just the beginning and the way the story continues to develop is just mind-blowing. And with the plot, you are pulled into this massive world-building that left me in complete awe. Everything is clearly explained and I am so in love with Ifueko. She manages to present to the reader various aspects of the empire of Aritsar, and I cannot express my gratitude for the fact the writer even took the opportunity to tell you the story of how Aritsar came to be, its gods, mythology and underworld. It’s amazing how you get to know this world without feeling overwhelmed or left in the dark. To be honest, lately, I felt there are so many YA fantasy novels out there with promising world-buildings which are not described in detail or the writer doesn’t clarify the structure.

All the characters are amazing. The writing is mesmerising. And that’s what it is with Raybearer, I absolutely loved the story and its characters, and the only complaint I have is that I don’t have book number two with me right now. Also, I think I need more Dayo. Damn, such an intriguing character!! I am so gutted we didn’t see him enough - for obvious reasons.

This story is so much more, it’s impossible to fit everything in one review. The plot takes many unexpected turns. There is a lot of West-African mythological elements, which makes the story even more entertaining and fascinating. There is politics, colonialism, politics, djinn, underworld, mental abuse, and so much more. But most importantly, this story is about love. Unconditional love. WOW! How did Jordan Ifueko fit so much in only 476 pages!!!

I honestly can’t wait to continue the journey with Tarisai, and continue to explore the empire of Aritsar. If you like fantasy stories with majestic and original world-buildings, you can’t miss this debut novel. I promise you will devour it.
