This book is so hard to describe but I found it absolutely amazing. A fantasy novel about a world so different yet it is described so well I felt that I knew it well by the end of the novel. The writing is really breath-taking and the whole novel transports you into the life of a young girl, Tarisai. I was compelled to keep reading and i did not want the story to end. Then when the ending came it was so unexpected that I find myself wanting to read more and more about the characters and this world.
Tarisai has been raised in a mansion with only servants and a mother called the Lady who visits very irregularly. Then when she is 11 her mother arrives and uses an oath on Tarisai and send's her to the capital with 2 tutors to accompany her on the journey. There she joins with other children to be chosen as a ray bearer for the next emperor. She has to forget her past to take this new path and discovers who she can and cannot trust.
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to read a story about friendship, family and how to believe in yourself and your convictions.
