I really enjoyed this book and I will be definitely buying the next book in the series.
Post-colonial literature is my thing and I really enjoyed the weaving of African myth and fantasy. Bonus points for maps and pronunciations, which this book had.
I believe this is a YA novel, but this didn't take away anything from the plot and story. I found the writing in the first few chapters, a little bit simplistic, but the writing matured and grew more authentic as the story built.
The plot twist, where it reveals The Lady's identity was really well done and it was unexpected to learn who she was.
I really like how the theme of empire was woven into the story, the erasing of the individual countries identities, traditions and songs was attempted to be carried out by the High Lord Judge, just like how colonialism really worked.
This type of YA literature is definitely needed in schools. Canonical literature as it now is not representative or inclusive, and leads to disengaged readers. Modern texts like this are what is needed.
Thanks for providing me with this book, it was great
