This book is unlike any other fantasy book I've ever read and I LOVED it. Inspired by West African folklore, 'Raybearer' tells the tale of Tarisai, brought up alone with a distant mother and ordered to become a murderer. When Tarisai comes in context with someone else, she can see their memories. 'Raybearer' has an intricate and unique world and plot, has an incredible writing style and introduces a diverse range of characters, keeping the reader engaged and interested at all times. I'm so incredibly excited for the next book, and I know that Ifueko will be able to captivate me just as much in that book as they did in this one. I simply adored the characterisation, was shocked and delighted with the ever-changing plot that kept me hooked, and felt wrapped-up in this fantastical yet flawed world for the duration of the novel. I will be recommending this to absolutely anyone that enjoys fantasy, and I can confidently say it is the best YA fantasy novel I have ever read.
