Tarisai longs for family and a place to belong, but when her mother, known only as The Lady, sends her to become one of the Crown Prince's anointed Council with the purpose of killing him, can she find a way to save her found family and her people at the same time?

This book was everything I have ever wanted and so much more! I adored every single word of this novel, and I know that I could devour it again and again. I could rave about this book for hours, but I will attempt to make a coherent review!

The first thing that captured me about this book was the rich, vibrant world it's set in. The world is so complex and full of diversity in and of itself that it mirrors our own world in the most beautiful way. Not to mention the way that this diversity is praised and upheld in the book itself. I loved learning about this fictional world and found myself so immersed in it that it was hard to put the book down and do anything else!

And don't even get me started about my love for the characters! I was really intrigued by how we got to see Tarisai evolve and grow up. I loved seeing her as a child and then maturing and finding herself and who she was meant to be. It made her emotions and her journey that much more relatable and intense for me. Her way of connecting to others and her fierce way of loving brought me into each character's story and made me love each and every one of them! (Well, almost all of them...)

From the world to the story to the characters in between, I utterly adored every single thing about this novel. If you are looking for a unique, diverse, breathtakingly beautiful debut novel, this is the book for you!
